چکیده

Treatment of massively obese patients by extended or intermittent starvation has proved to be a relatively benign method for initiating weight reduction programs. Because the problem of obesity is chronic and discouraging, starvation has a certain appeal for many patients, and it has not been difficult to obtain volunteers for metabolic observations. Since massively obese patients do not represent a homogeneous clinical group, this study was designed to determine whether the metabolic response to fasting would help classify these patients in a more precise way. When previously fasted patients are fed a low calorie diet, weight loss usually ceases. Bloom has claimed that the effect is found only when carbohydrate is fed.' The relation of the composition of the refeeding program to the weight course was, therefore, also studied.

Refeeding procedures after 43 days of total fasting.

Refeeding syndrome encompasses fluid and electrolyte imbalances and metabolic, intestinal, and cardiorespiratory derangements associated with appreciable morbidity and mortality. Although refeeding syndrome has been well documented in concentration-camp subjects, and more recently during parenteral therapy of critically ill patients, little is known about the importance of refeeding syndrome du...

Changes in the concentrations of the minor constituents of goat's milk during starvation and on refeeding of the lactating animal and their relationship to mammary gland metabolism.

1. Changes in the concentrations of the minor constituents of goat's milk were observed during 48 h starvation and on refeeding. 2. The concentrations of hexose phosphate and UDP-hexoses increased during starvation and decreased on refeeding. 3. The concentrations of phosphoenolpyruvate and glycerate 3-phosphate decreased during starvation and increased on refeeding. 4. Isocitrate:2-oxoglutarat...

Alterations in expression of genes associated with muscle metabolism and growth during nutritional restriction and refeeding in rainbow trout.

Rainbow trout, as well as many other species of fish, demonstrate the ability to survive starvation for long periods of time. During starvation, growth rate is decreased and muscle exhibits signs of wasting. However, upon resumption of feeding, accelerated growth is often observed. Alterations in muscle metabolism occur during feed restriction and refeeding, although the ways in which these alt...

Effects of intermittent feeding on compensatory growth, feed intake and body composition in Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer)

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of various starvation and refeeding periods on growth, feed utilization and body composition in Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) with an average initial weight of 30.26±1.4 g (mean±SE). The fish were exposed to three different regimes: the control group fed twice daily to apparent satiation throughout the experiment (C), th...

Glycogen Repletion in Brown Adipose Tissue upon Refeeding Is Primarily Driven by Phosphorylation-Independent Mechanisms

Glycogen storage in brown adipose tissue (BAT) is generally thought to take place through passive, substrate-driven activation of glycogenesis rather than programmatic shifts favoring or opposing the storage and/or retention of glycogen. This perception exists despite a growing body of evidence suggesting that BAT glycogen storage is actively regulated by covalent modification of key glycogen-m...
